Maternity Bereavement Suite Projects

Sadly, nationally over 100 babies die each week before, during or soon after birth. Women and their families who are living with a pregnancy loss are experiencing a unique form of grief, needing physical and psychological support from diagnosis right through to post delivery.

East Kent Hospitals Charity has supported two maternity bereavement suite projects, one at the Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital in Margate (Precious Memories) and one at the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford (Twinkling Stars).

These suites adjoin their maternity units to create a peaceful and private environment, but within close proximity, to ensure the safety of mothers who may require further monitoringCalming colours and quality, soft furnishings create a comfortable setting, with a kitchenette and en-suite bathroom.

See below for more information on each of these projects:

Precious Memories - Margate

Precious Memories was launched by staff at the QEQM Hospital in Margate to raise money to build, furnish and support a bereavement suite adjoining the Maternity Unit at the hospital. In October 2017, thanks to generous and dedicated support from donors and fundraisers, we opened Ocean Suite

The story does not end here... We still need charitable donations to keep the suite looking as good as new. The funds will be used to replace the soft furnishings, toiletries and decorations as and when needed.

Looking forward, approval has been granted for a private garden space just outside Ocean Suite for the sole use of its occupants.

Twinkling Stars Project - On 4th September 2014 Charlotte Bassett-Rogers gave birth to Blake Peton Bassett-Rogers who was stillborn at 25 weeks. In Blake's memory Charlotte and her two sisters Leigh Knight and Georgina Varnals set up Twinkling Stars Project under the East Kent Hospitals Charity, to raise funds and awareness in order to create a dedicated bereavement suite at the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford.

This project received a huge amount of support from the local community. Thanks to generous donors and devoted fundraisers, the new Twinkling Stars Suite has now received its official opening.

The story does not end here... The suite will need charitable support to keep it looking as good as new. The funds will be used to replace the soft furnishings, decorations and toiletries as and when required.

Moving forward, the room where bereavement counselling takes place is in need of a refresh. With the help of charitable funding this room can be transformed.
