The theme this year was Time to Act, and the importance of getting an early diagnosis. Estimates suggest one in three people living with dementia does not have a diagnosis.

The team this year also raised more than £2,000 for East Kent Hospitals Charity’s dementia fund with a raffle organised by nursing associate Gemma King, while dementia associate practitioner Ann McGovern held a ‘guess how many sweets in a jar’ competition.

Jade Garlick, lead specialist nurse for dementia care, said: “It was a very successful week, with some great engagement from staff.

“It was also Learning at Work Week so we invited our Executive team to take part in the dementia virtual tour which was a very valuable experience for them.”

The week ended off with a dementia champions session, opened by interim deputy chief nurse Katy White, which included a presentation from a carer on her experience of our hospitals with her mother, who is living with dementia.

Jade added: “This was very well-received and the feedback was that the carer was inspirational.

“There were also practical sessions in the afternoon such as elements of the dementia virtual tour, wearing a special frailty suit, and we hired the massage equipment for staff to sit back and relax as it was also Mental Health Awareness Week.”

Updated carers’ information packs were also re-launched during the week.
