Steve Crossland organised a charity bowls match at Deal Bowling Club to give back to the critical care team at the Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital in Margate, who helped fulfil the final wish of his wife, Sue.
Last year, senior sister Jen Moon and colleagues in the hospital's critical care unit went above and beyond to fulfil Sue's final wish to spend her last hours at home in Deal, surrounded by her husband Steve and beloved cat, Tia.
What had initially been thought impossible became a reality thanks to the determination of teams across the hospital, supported by East Kent Hospitals Charity's 3 Wishes Project, which supports hospital teams to fulfil personal wishes for patients receiving end-of-life care and their families.
Sue, a member of Deal Bowling club, took an active part in club competitions, alongside her husband Steve. While she was in hospital, staff also arranged for fellow club members to visit her on the unit and present her with bowling trophies she had been unable to collect in person.
Wanting to thank Jen, the critical care team and everyone involved in caring for Sue and supporting their family, Steve brought together friends, family and fellow bowlers for a special charity match at the club.

“It has been a pleasure to work with Steve and his friends whilst they organised this perfect way to honour Sue’s memory. I have heard many stories about Sue and I feel that she would have been very proud of what Steve achieved.
“The wish we were able to grant Sue is exactly why the project was started, and I am glad we were able to provide that small moment of comfort. We are very grateful to the Deal bowling community for raising this incredible amount of money, which means we will be able to continue providing help when needed.”
Steve said he was overwhelmed by the support shown by the bowling community and grateful to be able to give something back to the team who had made such a difference to Sue and their family.
The £2,670 raised will support the 3 Wishes Project, helping critical care teams fulfil personal wishes for other patients and their families.
