Tim Johnston’s son Otis visits Rainbow ward at least once a month for blood test for a rare autoimmune condition, so the family see first-hand the hard work of the team.
The five year old loves the playroom and toys, which staff use to help distract children and relieve boredom in those who have to stay for a while.
Tim, who has two other sons and runs a marketing agency, said: “The team are absolutely brilliant and work incredibly hard.
“My wife Natalie and I see the pressure they are under and we wanted to help in just a small way by raising money to help buy more toys and equipment for the children to use.
“No one wants to be in hospital but the staff do a great job in making it as fun as possible and helping to fund items for the playroom will make a real difference to a lot of families.
“Otis feels very comfortable there and we are hugely grateful to the team for everything they do.”
The event will take place at Ramsgate Football Club on Sunday, 9 July, from noon to 6pm and will feature a football match featuring local business owners and amateur players. There will also be stalls and entertainment.
Tim was hoping to raise £1,500 for East Kent Hospitals Charity but has already topped that amount with donations and sponsorship from fellow business owners.
He said: “Community always wins and people have been absolutely fantastic so far.
“So many people have experienced the amazing care on Rainbow ward and want to help, and we are hoping lots of people will join us on the day.
“There will be lots going on for people to enjoy and I’m very grateful to all the businesses who have provided sponsorship and everyone who has donated so far.”
Dee Neligan, senior charity officer for East Kent Hospitals Charity, said: “Rainbow ward is a very special place and we’re delighted Tim has chosen to raise money for some new toys and equipment.
“The response so far has been wonderful and it should be a lovely event to raise money for a great cause.”
