Zoey Wing, deputy ward manager for Rainbow Ward and Nina Parkes, a local permanent makeup and laser artist, braved both the giant swing and zip wire at Hangloose Adventure at Bluewater last month.
The pair met at a local gym where Nina taught fitness classes that Zoey regularly attended. Their bond grew stronger in 2024 when Nina’s son Jackson was admitted to QEQM and Zoey helped support the family.
Nina said: “My son Jackson was taken in last year and treated for Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) – a very rare, life-threatening immune system disorder. We were eventually transferred to Evelina London Children’s Hospital, but I’ll forever be grateful that QEQM acted quickly with treatment. The staff on Rainbow Ward were amazing, and I feel they saved his life.”
Determined to give something back, Nina and Zoey took on the thrilling giant swing and zip wire challenge together.
Nina said: “The day was incredible, and we had such a laugh. We started with the giant swing, which we were both nervous about, then did the zip wire. Both experiences were brilliant and we’d definitely do it again. I hope what we raised will help support the ward and that means so much to me.”
The money raised will go towards supporting children and families receiving care on the ward and help to provide additional comforts, equipment and experiences to make their hospital stay a little brighter.
